Abstract

In recent years, as the offshore industry has moved towards deeper water and harsher environments, the problem of modelling the interactions of steep waves with offshore structures has become an increasing concern. However, the development of increasingly accurate and efficient numerical models has been a continuous challenge. This seminar presents different approaches used to simulate numerically the nonlinear wave interaction with offshore structures, as well as other topics related to the modelling of turbulence flow past a structure. The presentation will focus on the review of previous works on the potential and viscous flow modelling, produced by the speaker during the past few years. At the same time, the possible extension and application of the existing programs developed by the speaker, and the research interest in some novel numerical techniques for free surface capturing will also be proposed. In addition, the speaker will also introduce the major research in the department and the profile of the university, especially for those who are interested in pursuing the graduate study in NUS.

About the speaker

Dr. BAI Wei joined the National University of Singapore as an Assistant Professor in Department of Civil Engineering in March 2009. From 1992, he studied at Dalian University of Technology, China, and received his Ph.D. there in Port, Coastal and Offshore Engineering in 2001. Following this, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2001 to 2003. Dr. Bai was an academic visitor at Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities from April 2003. In April 2004, he joined the University of Oxford as a postdoctoral research assistant. From January 2007 to February 2009, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Dr. Bai's research interests concern the Computational Marine Hydrodynamics and Fluid Dynamics, with emphasis on the numerical simulation of wave interaction with offshore and coastal structures.
