Speaker: Professor Thorsten Stoesser, University College London, UK

Abstract:

In this talk, the method of large-eddy simulation (LES) is introduced and its unique capabilities in fluids engineering research is highlighted. Professor Stoesser will introduce and discuss a sea of applications-based research in which LES is employed to better understand the near-field fluid dynamics. The data from LES are analysed to uncover and elucidate details of the flow physics.  Applications include: the near-field hydrodynamics of rough-bed flows, fluid-structure interaction of tidal turbines, multi-phase flows of deep-ocean plumes, turbulence structures in the context of local scour, coastal hydrodynamics and wave-structure interactions.

Short Bio:

Professor Thorsten Stoesser is the Leader of the Engineering Fluid Mechanics Research Group in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering at University College London. His research interest is in developing advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools and their application to hydraulic engineering and environmental fluid mechanics problems. Currently he is the PI for an EPSRC grant (EP/R022135/1) and Co-I for two EPSRC grants (EP/R042640/1, EP/L016214/1). He has published over 60 journal papers on developing, testing and applying advanced CFD methods to predict hydrodynamics in rivers, estuaries and coastal waters, or fluid-structure interaction of marine turbines. He has co-authored the IAHR monograph “Large-eddy simulation in Hydraulics” and in 2015 he received the IAHR’s Harold Jan Schoemaker award. Thorsten won the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize in 2012 and 2016. He won the ICE’s George Stephenson Medal in 2016 for a paper on modelling fluid structure interaction. Currently, he serves as an Associate Editor for Journal of Hydraulic Engineering (ASCE), Journal of Hydraulic Research (IAHR), and International Journal of Sediment Research (Elsevier).
